Tufropes, an Indian multinational manufacturer of ropes for a wide range of applications are expanding into the nonwovens market with a focus on the development of innovative nonwovens for health, hygiene and medical applications. Among its first launches is an inherently antibacterial/antimicrobial spunbond.

The 100% polypropylene spunbond nonwoven, available in 15-30gsm, was tested in third-party labs, which showed that the nonwoven is inherently antibacterial/antimicrobial with an effectiveness of  >90%. The material is ideal for surgical face masks and other medical disposables and personal protective equipment (PPE). The antibacterial spunbond can also add huge functional value in feminine care and baby care products when used as a top sheet in sanitary napkins, panty liners and baby diapers, the company says.

“Considering the current uncertain times due to the pandemic, all single-use disposable items should be inherently antibacterial/antimicrobial, that was the basis of our product development,” says Pranay Sahu, senior vice president & business head – Nonwovens, Tufropes. “Nonwovens that are coated/impregnated with antimicrobial/antibacterial chemicals, however, are not safe and are unreliable. Most importantly, such chemicals can be medicine for one person’s skin, but maybe poisonous to another person’s skin, which can lead to skin allergies and irritations.
